MURDOCH'S URALKYD 500  (PRINTABLE PDF)

Murdoch’s Uralkyd 500™ Floor Finish is the perfect product to use when you are looking for an extremely durable finish with a quick build that has a crystal clear sheen.  Murdoch’s Uralkyd 500ä is a high-quality resin, formulated with low toxic driers and solvents. It is truly a unique product because of its formulation and performance! Our Gloss formulation has a brilliant luster, much like the gloss from a French Polish! Our Matte and Satin formulations dry to a clear, bright surface eliminating the "plastic" look that is seen in so many other low sheen resin based systems.  We have also added a "scuff guard" ingredient that gives the surface an incredibly smooth feel and makes it resistant to scuff marks and allows grit to "roll" right over the surface without digging into the finish.

Some of the outstanding features of Murdoch’s Uralkyd 500™ are its ability to dry in 6-8 hours and application of the finish in virtually any climatic condition! (Note: Matte and Satin Lustres will require longer cure times 12-24 hours.) In addition, it is formulated with our low-toxic, all botanical solvent, Di-Citrusol™ which has a pleasant, citrus odor that dissipates rapidly. Its light-honey color will not change the natural color of the wood or alter any pre-applied stain color. It also minimizes the ambering that occurs with the aging process of a wood finish.

DIRECTIONS FOR USING MURDOCH’S URALKYD 500™ FLOOR FINISH

WOOD PREPARATION:

All wood surfaces should be free of lint, dirt, grease, wax, oil and old paint.
Refinishing old wood that has minimal wear: If the surface is intact but is just worn, lightly sand the surface using 220/320 grit sandpaper. Vacuum and tack the surface.
Refinishing old wood with a badly damaged surface: You will need to  remove all the old finish and then thoroughly sand the wood using a 100 or 120 grit paper or screen with 100/120 grit new screen. The sealing process may be reduced to one coat of Hard Sealer™ as some finish still remains in the woods fibers. If your first coat of Hard Sealer™ is quickly absorbed then do a second coat before applying topcoats. If you plan to add stain, apply one coat of clear Hard Sealer and then add stain to your second coat.
For new wood: sand to100 or 120 grit. Vacuum and tack the surface thoroughly prior to applying the Hard Sealer™. For new wood, we recommend that you apply two coats of Murdoch’s Hard Sealerä or Polymerized Tung Oil Sealer with Stain prior to using Murdoch’s Uralkyd 500™ Floor FinishIf you plan to stain the wood, please refer to our  Old World Stains literature for best staining results.

APPLICATION OF MURDOCH’S URALKYD 500™ FLOOR FINISH
After adequately sealing the wood to be finished, apply two-four coats of the Uralkyd 500™ Floor Finish. For maximum protection, we recommend applying three coats. Apply using only a good natural bristle brush or a 12"short napped synthetic applicator. Do not use a roller, rag or cheesecloth as they will streak the surface. You will need to flow the resin on and move along as the resin sets up quickly. It is important to apply the Uralkyd 500™ thinly. Applying the product thickly interferes with the curing time, in addition to wasting the product. The flattening agent in the Satin and Matte formulations will need to be stirred into solution as it settles to the bottom. Also, stir the coating periodically throughout the application time to keep the finish in a homogenous luster which prevents streaking. The surface should be cured for re-coat in 6-8 hrs. for Gloss, and 12-24 hrs. for Matte and Satin Lustres. Total coating hardness is achieved after a week.

Cure Test: lightly sand in several inconspicuous areas. A fine, white powder indicates that you can safely apply another coat.  After each coat is cured, prepare the surface by lightly hand sanding using a 320/400 grit paper for small areas or for larger floors, a buffing machine with a used 120/150 grit screen. Vacuum the surface thoroughly prior to re-coating. The second coat of Uralkyd 500™ Floor Finish is applied the same way as the first, as are all subsequent coats. If you wish to obtain a higher gloss, repeat the application process until the desired sheen is reached. The brush/applicator can be cleaned with turpentine, mineral spirits, or our citrus-derived solvent, Sutherland Welles Ltd.â ’s Di-Citrusolä .

RESURFACING OF MURDOCH’S URALKYD 500™ FLOOR FINISH
In time, all coatings get worn off a surface and you will need to re-coat. Subsequent applications of Murdoch’s Uralkyd 500™ Floor Finish bond permanently with previously applied coats. Remove water soluble soil with ammonia and water.  Floors should be screened with a 120/150grit screen and vacuumed thoroughly. Thinly apply one or two coats of Uralkyd 500 Floor Finish™ according to the above stated instructions.

MAINTENANCE OF A MURDOCH’S URALKYD 500Ô FLOOR FINISH
The surface can be cleaned with a mop and a weak solution of ammonia or vinegar and warm water.

COVERAGE: 250-300 sq.ft./ quart or 1000-1200 sq.ft/ gallon, after two coats of Hard Sealer™.
