MURDOCH'S HARD OIL (PRINTABLE PDF)

Murdoch’s Hard Oilä is the perfect product to use when you are looking for a light look with minimal grain definition. It is the recommended finish for use in a pickling process. Use as the first coat to allow the white pigment to lay up on the surface and then as a non-yellowing topcoat to seal in the whiting agent and protect the surface. It is also ideal as a wiping topcoat for cabinets and furniture after two coats of the clear Murdoch's Hard Sealer™ or Hard Sealer with Stain. If you are looking for the high gloss of a "French Polish" hand-rubbed look just brush on Hard Oil and don't wipe.  This extremely versatile formulation is a combination of a pure high-quality uralkyd resin, our Botanical Polymerized Tung Oil, low toxic driers, and the cleanest solvents available today! The resin provides a rich high sheen, incredible durability, and a fast drying time (4-6 hours). The Polymerized Tung Oil permits lubrication of the resin making application as a brush-on finish not only possible, but very easy. The Polymerized Tung Oil also enhances the sheen as well as allowing you to wipe the coating. This resin and our Polymerized Tung Oil formulation eliminates the "plastic" look that is seen in so many other resin based systems.

Polymerization, or cooking Tung Oil, is a process which utilizes controlled heating and cooling of the oil to change the oil’s molecular structure and facilitate cross-bonding of one application of Polymerized Tung Oil to another. Murdoch’s Hard Oil ä employs the Loc-Laminâ Wood Finishing System, which together with the polymerization process, increases the durability and integrity of our wood finish. Properly applied, you will never see any Sutherland Welles Ltd.â product de-laminate or peel.

Hard Oil is the best choice when you need the protection that a urethane coating offers but you want a "softer" surface, one that doesn’t look like it has a lot of finish on it. "Protection without presence". The Hard Oil is the best choice when you want to control the color and keep a surface light, such as in the "Swedish look". The Hard Oil is your sealer coat and reduces the wood’s ability to take on color as well as minimizing grain definition.

In addition, it has a pleasant, citrus odor that dissipates rapidly. Its light-honey color will not change the natural color of the wood or alter any pre-applied stain color. It also minimizes the ambering that occurs with the aging process of a wood finish.

DIRECTIONS FOR USING MURDOCH’S HARD OIL™ ON TRIM, WALLS, CABINETS, FURNITURE

WOOD PREPARATION:
All wood surfaces should be free of lint, dirt, grease, wax, oil and old paint. If you are refinishing old wood, please make sure to remove any loose old finish and then lightly sand the wood using up to a 220/320 grit paper. New wood should be sanded with a 220 grit. Avoid using higher grits as they close down the wood pores interfering with maximum penetration of the Murdoch's Hard Oil™ deep into the wood fibers.

APPLICATION OF MURDOCH’S HARD OILä
Apply the Hard Oil with a good quality natural bristle brush. If you plan to stain the wood, we recommend a clear first coat of Hard Oil™ to make the color uptake on the second coat uniform. Hard Oil can brushed out and allowed to cure which will give more protection and a quicker build. It is important to apply the Hard Oil™ thinly. Applying the product thickly interferes with the drying and curing time, in addition to wasting the product! Or you can apply the Hard Oil™ with a brush and then wipe the surface using a rag or cheesecloth balled to fit in the palm of your hand. Use circular motions to develop the sheen with the final wipe being in the direction of the grain.

The surface should be dry and cured in four to six hours. To test for dryness; lightly sand an inconspicuous area. A fine, white powder indicates that you can safely apply another coat. The entire first coat should be lightly sanded using a 220 grit paper, vacuum and tack the surface prior to re-coating. If you are staining the wood, add the stain to the second coat of Hard Oil™. The second coat is applied the same way as the first, as are all subsequent coats. After each coat is cured, the surface should be lightly sanded with 400 grit paper, vacuumed, and tacked before applying another coat of Hard Oil™. If you wish to obtain a higher gloss, repeat the application process until the desired sheen is reached. The brush can be cleaned with turpentine, mineral spirits, or a citrus-derived solvent, such as Sutherland Welles Ltd.â ’s Di-Citrusolä or Citrus Thinner.

MAINTENANCE OF MURDOCH’S HARD OILä FINISH

The Loc-Laminâ Finishing System facilitates easy maintenance of a Hard Oil finish. Subsequent applications of Murdoch’s Hard Oil bond permanently with previously applied coats. Remove dirt and grime with a solvent of your choice. Lightly sand the surfaces to be re-coated with a 320/400 paper. Thinly apply one or two coats of the Hard Oil according to the above stated instructions.

APPLICATION OF MURDOCH’S HARD OILä ON NEW WOOD FLOORS OR A RESURFACED WOOD FLOORS:

We recommend three coats of Hard Oil™ to create a protected surface with the look of a hand-rubbed finish. Thinly apply the first coat of the Hard Oil™ using a good natural bristle brush or a short napped lambs wool applicator. Most of the first coat should be absorbed by the wood. Allow the coat to cure approximately 4-6 hours. After the surface is cured, either screen the surface using a 120/150 used screen or buff with # 1 steel wool or hand sand with 220 grit paper. Vacuum the floor thoroughly.

If you are planning on staining the wood, the first coat should be applied clear to help give the wood surface an even porosity for uniform color absorption in later coats. If you want to add color, do so in the second coat. We suggest brushing a colored coat, but it is possible to apply a clear coat with a lambs wool applicator. Allow the surface to cure 6-12 hours. A higher percentage of color will extend the curing time.

If you added color to your second coat of Hard Oil™, we recommend using a buffing machine and a #1 steel wool pad to prepare the surface as steel wool will not remove the color from the surface. Buff the entire surface of the floor in the direction of the grain. If your second was clear, you may screen the floor using a 120/150 used screen. In areas where the buffing machine won’t reach such as in corners or on stairs, use a 200 grit paper and lightly hand sand those areas. Vacuum all the surfaces. Apply the third coat . Each coat after the initial clear sealer coat can be colored if desired. In lieu of a third coat of Hard Oil™, you may buff the floor using a high quality carnauba paste wax. The brush and lambs wool can be cleaned with turpentine, mineral spirits, or a citrus-derived solvent, such as Sutherland Welles Ltd.â ’s Di-Citrusolä or Citrus Thinner.

RE- SURFACING MURDOCH’S HARD OILä FINISH OR APPLYING HARD OIL OVER AN EXISTING FLOOR FINISH

Remove dirt and grime with Sutherland Welles Ltd.® Cleaner. Thinly apply one or two coats of the Hard Oil ™ according to the above stated instructions. You will need to dry buff in between coats.
