Announcing the creation of Sutherland Welles Ltd. ® Fine Furniture ~

You often hear about owners of small companies who in the pursuit of their craft end up creating companies that stretch that craft into new thriving businesses. Sutherland Welles Ltd. ® began in that fashion from a floor finishing company inspired by Frank Welles.  In 1996, Mary joined that mission with her passion for finishing wood in both furniture and architectural installations. As with so many craftsmen turned business owners, the pursuit of the craft often gets sidelined as the need to manage the business grows. This has been the case for us.

The time has come to return to the craft that feeds our souls. The goal to establish a furniture company to compliment our Tung Oil business has been on our agenda for a long time. Sutherland Welles Ltd. is thriving with wonderful customers and a phenomenal staff here that offer superlative service.

It’s time to expand Sutherland Welles Ltd. ® to offer furniture finished in the Sutherland Welles Ltd. ® tradition, using our own products and our collective finishing expertise that encompasses over 60 years of interacting with wood.

We are currently creating pieces that will have a broad appeal that are neither from a specific period nor style.  Initially, we will be focusing on tables of all sizes and styles, offering both hardwoods and softwoods and working extensively in reclaimed wood.

Over the years, so many of you have said “I wish you could teach me how to finish this piece”. Our new facility, known as “The Mill”, has enough space to offer finishing workshops. You will be able to purchase unfinished furniture from us or bring your own piece and spend a weekend learning how to finish wood. We hope to be able to offer our first weekend workshop by the end of this summer. Come spend a weekend with us, learn a skill and share in our enthusiasm for finishing.
