The Sutherland Welles Ltd.® line of Botanical Polymerized Tung Oil wood finishes is the culmination of five years of research and testing to formulate a line of finishes with the lowest toxicity possible that are both environmentally responsible and finisher-friendly. The successful completion of that goal involved extensive investigation, formulation and testing of various solvents and driers that are the two components in our Original Formula of hand-rubbed finish that are associated with the toxicity issue. We wanted to maintain the inherent superior quality of our Pure Polymerized Tung, without slowing the drying and curing process. Today, the difference in our Original Formula and the Botanical  line is only in the solvents. Having found low toxic dryers that are efficient and compatible with all our formulations, we now formulate our entire product line with driers that have the lowest toxicity available.

We believe to offer a true low-toxic product, it is necessary to reduce or eliminate petroleum by-products. To attain this goal, we developed a solvent called Di-Citrusol™, that is a renewable, 100% citrus-plant derived solvent, that is friendly to both the environment and the user.

Please note: There are some cases where the user is chemically sensitive to even the lowest toxic, 100% natural solvents. Make sure to test your reaction to the use of these products prior to a large exposure such as finishing a large indoor project.
